A Brief Review On Chillers

By:

Chillers are the prime importance for the air conditioning and refrigeration world. They are required in all industries such as in Pharmaceutical formulations, paper and cement processing, power suppliers, compressed air and gas cooling, die-casting and machine tooling, welding equipments and metal working, food and beverages and many more. In the industry the chillers are centralized and sometimes de-centralized; according to the requirements. Chillers in air conditioning systems are used in cooling re-circulated water which was initially distributed to heating coils which cool the air and the water is sent to chillers for cooling.

Uses of chillers:
oChillers are used in automatic gates, pumps compressor, vapour control system and many more along with its initial use of providing refrigeration and air conditioning.
oThey reduce the chance of breakdown and hence give long term reliability,
oThey can be easily repaired and maintained.
oThey are used in central vacuum systems, distillation, drying systems, solvent recovery, and soil remediation.
oThey have good liquid handling capability since its pumps handle high volumes of vapours, condensable and liquids without any negative consequences in mechanical reliability.

Other areas of interest:
*Air pollution control:
1.The chillers provide recovery of hydrocarbon vapour by upgrading their service, using of centrifugal pumps, vacuum pump and blower and carbon change-out.
2.Vapour destruction: It includes hydroseal maintenance, nozzle cleaning, and catalytic thermal oxidiser and may more.

*Carbon handling: Whatever hydrocarbon are recovered, they are handled in the following ways:
1.Carbon change-out: Using filtration canister, carbon removal equipment, the dust created from handling carbon is controlled and stored in super-sacs.
2.Carbon sampling and testing: It is a quality control process in which carbon is sampled from a whole and its condition and performance is observed and documented and then lab testing are carried out.
3.Carbon sales: Carbon is sold only to approve and equipment manufacturers.
4.Carbon disposal: The carbon after use is either disposed of or recycled.

Chiller repair and maintenance:
*The chillers can be repaired by learning to identify the chiller subsystem and providing good servicing.
*The basic subsystem in chillers is the HVAC or the refrigeration system.
*The most common problems are the dust build up on the condenser coils which are mostly due to keeping them in dusty areas.
*This can be repaired by dusting, vacuuming or spraying with compressed air.
*The system should be allowed to power down before providing maintenance so that the hot parts will cool and cool parts will warm up so that it becomes easy to handle.
*Damaged door seal can be either replaced or repaired according to the requirement.
*Leakage from the refrigeration unit is due to system failure or overheating problems.
*Larger HVAC systems have primary and secondary drain pipes which have the possibility of rusting.
*To avoid it, an overflow pan is installed to the secondary pipe; obstructing the main drain pipe.
Thus chillers are essential and proper usage and good maintenance will increase their efficiency and can be used for long time.
