Ultimately the careful selection of certain keywords is an essential activity. Achieving high rankings can take a great deal of time and hence, when embarking on the SEO process, results should not be expected immediately, a timescale of six months is sensible although this will vary in accordance with the popularity of the keywords. Another reason optimisation needs to be utilised as a service is that search engine algorithms are in a constant state of flux, meaning that a number one result will not stay there forever, to remain in the upper echelons of results a constant effort is needed.
