A Brief History Of The Camera

By:

Our memories define who we are, what we do, and even how we think. We don't always want to remember the bad ones, but the good, happy ones we never want to forget. Two hundred years ago people didn't have the option of preserving their memories for years to come.

Today, however, we can keep every precious moment of our lives tucked away in a shoebox or stored safely on a disc where they can be accessed with a simple computer thanks to a couple of inventors who believed real time could be frozen, and the many inventors after them that believed a good invention could be made better.

The first machine used to take a still photograph was the camera obscura. The year was 1827. The image it created took eight hours to complete and eventually faded. The inventor, Joseph Nicephore Niepce knew he had a great idea, but wasn't quite able to make it work.

Eventually he partnered with Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, another inventor who believed that a still image could be created using light exposure. The two of them worked together to improve Joseph's invention. In 1833 Joseph died, but Louis continued with the research and in 1839 the Daguerreotype was born. This invention created an image in less than thirty minutes and the image didn't fade. It was, for all intents and purposes, the first camera.

Since then the initial invention has been continued to be improved upon. In the 1840's negatives began to be used to create multiple images. The 1850's brought about a camera that could capture the image in mere seconds rather than thirty minutes. From there it moved onto film, a marketable camera, and then the 35 mm camera that we still use today.

Flash, instant pictures, color, auto focus, red eye reduction... everything was made better through one form or another. Today we have the luxury of digital cameras, giving us the ability to take a picture, see it instantly, and broadcast it all over the world if we want.

Naturally, since photos have now gone digital we need digital programs such as Photoshop and Nero 5 to alter or enhance undesirable photos, repair damaged photos, or even create slideshows and videos using the pictures we love. Many of these videos end up on the internet for the world to see. Truly, photography has come a long way since that first summer day in 1827, and it will continue to get better as technology advances.
