A Brief History Of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee

By:

Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is known to come from a small area in Jamaica. It derives its name from the fact that it is grown in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, among the highest mountains in the Caribbean. But few people realize that it is not native to the area. The history of how the coffee came to inhabit the area is a rich and fascinating one.

It is reported to have been sent to the area, by the then King of France, around 1723-1728. The Jamaican governor at the time enjoyed the coffee so much that he decided to grow it right there in Jamaica so he wouldn't have to continue importing it. Why pay to import something you can have grown right in your own backyard after all?

The Blue Mountains were ideal for the particular strain; 5,500 feet above sea level, and heavily wooded, the soil is rich and dark, just like the coffee. Natives then began growing it on their own land, and the rest, as they say, is history. The only fully integrated processing facility for the production of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is nestled at 3,000 feet, and is the only facility in the world that processes the coffee from berry to cup.

The country has legislation that helps determine the labeling and marketing of the product, ensuring that only the best and authentic coffee is labeled as 100 percent Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. It denotes the geographical boundaries, and other factors that determine the quality of the bean. It is also usually exported in barrels, already roasted, to ensure a quality product.

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee has a very clean and fresh taste, with a noticeable pleasant sweetness. The flavor is bold, smooth and rich. While that combination sounds odd, they blend seamlessly with one another to produce a truly unique coffee drinking experience.

The drink's reputation has made it one of the most expensive and most sought after coffees in the world. At various points in its history, Jamaican Mountain Blue has held the title of the most expensive coffee in the world.

There are various classifications of the coffee, determined by such factors as the size of the beans, defects, type of bean, and so forth. The "triage" class is considered the lowest class of Jamaican Mountain Blue, with a variety of bean sizes and up to 4 percent containing "significant defects."
