According to the history of Geneva, the first traces of human civilization were discovered around 3000 BC on the shores of Leman Lake. However, human civilization was established on the hill of the Old City only after 1000 BC. The Celtic tribes defended the Roman attack on Geneva later on.

Julius Caesar defended the attacks of the Helvetii on Geneva in 58 BC. It went under the bishop rule in 400 AD. Burgundians, a Germanic tribe who settled down in Geneva in 443 AD were defeated by the Francs. The latter occupied the land in 534 AD.

Before dissolution of Geneva in the 11th century, it was ruled by the Merovingian dynasty and then by the Carlovingian Empire. After its disintegration, it was ruled by the Second Burgundian Kingdom. The Germanic emperors took over the possession of the kingdom in 1032 AD.

Despite that, Geneva was in practice, ruled by the bishops from the 11th century till Reformation. It was successful in getting an international exposure at the end of the Middle Ages with the fairs reaching their apex in 1400 AD. The town was forced to submit by the princes of the Savoy Dynasty, who ruled Geneva from 13th-17th century.

Geneva became a republic in 1535 AD. The oppressed Protestants after 1550 AD entered Geneva for finding shelter. They were guided by Theodore de Beze and Calvin. Charles Emmanuel, the Duke of Savoy attacked launched his historic Escalade attack on Geneva in 1602 AD.

Industrialization began in Geneva in 1700 AD that made it to proper heavily. However, the political and social unrest shook Geneva. France annexed it in 1798 AD. It was however successful in gaining freedom from France on December 31, 1813. After the First World War, Geneva became the headquarters of the League of Nations.
