A Brief Description Of The Historical Past Of Acupuncture.

By:

The ancient Chinese history shows the attempts to tell the truth about acupuncture. The historic data, such as the maps of meridians and acupuncture points, indicate they were carefully analyzed and reported. But the lack of technical terms at the time limited its explanation , and as a result, most of the ancient texts were interpreted based on the readers experience, more subjective than objective. The challenge is subsequently to clarify the true meaning of the data presented more than two thousand years ago. We need to interpret the ancient acupuncture in the light of the 21st century science and technology. During the past few decades, numerous randomized controlled clinical trials have suggested that acupuncture is effective. Yet, little is known about how acupuncture produces the therapeutic results it does.

Ancient Chinese had a deep passion towards the organic unity of the universe and of the human body as a whole. They believed that there were two basic opposite sides of forces, Yang and Yin. The former represents, for example, bright, sunny and positive, and the latter dark, shadowy and negative. In human body, they are expressed as Qi and blood. Qi is similar to the pneuma in Stoic and Greek medicine. Joseph Needham, a biochemist, indicated that Qi and pneuma are untranslatable but could be called life-breath or ethereal - a form of energy. Normally, the two forces are operating in balance.

While blood circulates in the blood vessels, Qi flows in the channels named meridians (Jin Luo). Meridians are the conductive pathways of a network sustaining the circulation of Qi. Blood and Qi are interrelated and mutually accommodating. Therefore, they are working to counter balancing as Yin and Yang. The two forces along with five elements (i.e., metal, wood, water, fire and earth) are fundamental to the basic physiology and pathology in traditional Chinese medicine. Ancient Chinese believes that Qi can be enhanced. Along the meridians, there are many points called acu-points. Each acupuncture point may be regarded as a switch that manages the flow of energy. Malfunction of these switches can result in blockage of Qi flow, which may lead to illnesses. Acupuncture stimulating acu-points can unblock the meridians and therefore Eliminate the diseases.
