A Basic Tool Kit Every Homeowner Should Have

Trying to hang a picture with a brick, changing a plug with a knife and scissors, this does not sound ideal and it's not !. We should all have some small tool kit to hand. This does not have to be a full professional builders kit, rather we suggest some basic items that will make an every day task in the home easier

The situations that the average homeowner will need to handle without calling a professional include hanging pictures, putting up curtains, tightening bolts, assembling furniture and making minor repairs. These tasks require a variety of tools, and for that reason a basic tool kit needs to have both power tools and hand tools.

Hand Tools

The most useful hand tool a homeowner can keep on hand is a hammer. Hammers are used more than any other hand tool. They are useful to both drive nails in and pull them out. Screwdrivers are another must. Both a Phillips and a flathead screwdriver belong in the kit. A stud finder and a level are also important hand tools. Studfinders locate the studs hidden beneath the drywall quickly and much more accurately. Knowing the exact placement of studs is important for hanging pictures and shelves. Levels are used to make sure objects are level when they are being assembled or attached to a wall.

Another important hand tool is a measuring tape. This is useful for making sure something will fit into a tight space and measuring cuts. Other hand tools that should be a part of the kit include a wrench, a pair of regular pliers and a pair of needle nose pliers.

Power Tools

The most important power tool in a basic tool kit is the cordless drill. These are used in home improvement projects more often than hammers. A drill is used to bore holes for nails, screws and hooks in walls, cabinets and furniture. Cordless drills are the best option because they can be used outside and in places indoors where the cord just won't reach.

One more indispensable power tool is the circular saw. Eventually, every homeowner is going to need to cut something, be it a piece of molding or a landscaping timber, and it is best to have a tool on hand that will do the job. The saw should also be cordless if possible.

All power tools should be sturdy, lightweight and easy to use. Batteries may or may not come with the tool. Often the most economical way to purchase power tools is to buy a set. These sets usually come with a cordless drill, a circular saw, one or two more tools, a battery and a charging stand. Many even come with a carrying bag.

Hardware and Storage

A basic tool kit should also contain some commonly used hardware such as nails, screws, washers, nut and bolts. A prepackaged assortment can be bought at many stores.

Finally, the kit should be stored in a tool bag or tool box in an easy to reach location.
