Even with the turmoil of the U.S. economy, the problems with the job market and the unsteady economy in Europe and other areas, the quality of life in 'first world' countries is still significantly higher than anywhere else. Being able to have food, shelter, running water and medical help in second and third world countries has gotten better over the years; it's still a challenge for far too many people. These people still need help from service groups and churches to improve their lives and those who volunteer for summer teen service programs have a huge impact on these people's lives.

Many second and third world countries have been affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes and those affected need all or any help they can get. This means there are a lot of possible destinations that those looking to do something in the teen service line can go to and have the knowledge that their summer off from school can make a real difference in the lives of others.

Choices that are not only going to be beneficial to the locals but an opportunity for the volunteers also are:

Unfortunately, weather and conditions have created poor and disadvantaged areas in these countries where help is needed. Teen service groups can come in and help them by building houses and churches, being part of medical groups that come in and provide health care and training. Some people in these countries, especially those who have been devastated by earthquakes are either living in tents and temporary shelters or are staying with family and their needs for even basic services like food, clean water and clothing is sharp. Being able to help these people to rebuild is definitely a great thing to do with a summer vacation.

The other benefit to going to these countries to help is the fact that these are beautiful and exotic places to go on vacation. The islands are tropical locations, and all of them have lots of natural beauty and history to explore. Summer teen service programs give you the opportunity to possibly be in the country for several weeks which means you'll experience hard work, but you'll also get to enjoy the scenery and the local culture. This becomes the trip of a lifetime in more ways than one.
