9 Reasons To Quit Drinking Soda

By:

In recent years, people have become more health conscious, putting sodas under attack. Research studies have indicated problems of drinking soft drinks, many being health related. Here are nine reasons why it is a good idea to avoid soft drinks.

1. Sodas have absolutely no nutritional value. They are simply filtered water and sugar, and yet the average American consumes about 57 gallons of soda.

2. Drinking soft drinks causes weight gain because of the extra calories in them. With just one 330ml can a day, one can easily gain one pound each month. Studies show that those who drink sodas are 1.6 times more at risk of becoming obese. Furthermore, this obesity increases chances of developing diabetes because the body is no longer able to process the sugar being consumed. Experts believe the increase in diabetics from 6.6 million in the 1980s to 20.8 million today is mainly a result of drinking soda on a regular basis.

3. Soda can lead to weakened bones and higher risk of osteoporosis. Calcium is an important component that makes up bones and teeth, and it definitely cannot be found in soda. Soda may even cause the loss of calcium and weaken the bones even further. The acidity in soda causes more tooth decay and leads to sensitive teeth.

4. Soft drinks can cause kidney damage and kidney stones, particularly those who drink it on a regular basis. Drinking more than two sodas per day causes one to be twice as likely to generate chronic kidney disease. Drinking non-cola beverages do not seem to exhibit the same damage.

5. Soda is high in high fructose corn syrup, which can escalate one's blood pressure. According to recent studies, consuming about 4 sodas a day can cause a rate of borderline high blood pressure.

6. Research suggests a high intake of soda can lead to cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver and poor liver function as a result of chronic liver disease. This is usually common among chronic alcoholics.

7. The intake of soft drinks causes dehydration, which subsequently triggers a higher intake. The sugar and caffeine in colas will only make the body thirstier.

8. Caffeine in soft drinks causes restlessness, tension, insomnia, high blood pressure, irritability, excessive urination, irregular heartbeats, gastrointestinal disturbances, and more.

9. Diet soft drinks are not better off than regular soda. Artificial sweeteners, especially Aspartame, are known to be a very harmful ingredient in foods and beverages. There are over 92 possible side effects from these artificial sweeteners that are used in diet sodas.
