8 Tips On Keeping Your Pet Bird Healthy

By:

All loving pet owners want the best quality of life for their animals, and bird owners are no exception. There are a few guidelines to follow to help ensure that your pet bird lives a long, happy, and healthy life.

1. If you want your bird to have a long life, you should feed them nutritional food. If you don't feed them properly, they can get sick or malnourished and their life span decreases. Give the right kind of food to your bird.

2. Birds that belong to the family of parrots will eat a wide variety of foods. You shouldn't give them only seeds to eat. A lot of people that have birds for the first time make this mistake. The birds will get mostly fat, with not enough vitamins and protein.

3. They will eat almost any type of table food, but they should be given something healthy, like things that have pretzels, grains, bread and wheat pastas. They shouldn't be fed with high fat foods. You should always avoid giving birds avocados.

4. Some good foods that can be given to birds are legumes, fruits and beans. Whether they will accept a new food depends on the bird. Some will embrace new experiences more easily than others. Even if it takes a longer time, keep trying to teach your bird to eat healthy food.

5. If you want to change their diet, you should do it in time, slowly. You should feed the bird twice each day, for an hour. If food is left in the cage for a longer period of time, it might get bacteria, so it should stay there only for an hour.

6. The bird should get their food twice a day. When the bird gets hungry it will usually become more active. Another good part of the twice per day feeding is that they will be more likely to test a new food. You can also find out easier how much the bird is eating this way. When you see that the bird isn't eating properly you can start worrying about their health.

7. In some cases birds will be picky about what they eat, so giving them a wide variety of foods is hard. In this case, you can try cooking or warming the vegetables.

8. Water is as important to birds as it is for people. Make sure that the water in the cage is always clean and fresh. The bowls where the water is kept should also be washed on a daily basis. A good idea would be to put water soluble vitamins for birds in the water you're giving them. They should be found at most pet stores.

Picking a bird as your pet can be a great choice for your family, and their long life insures that you will enjoy them for a long time. You should take good care of them and feed them a healthy diet.
