8 Steps To Getting Your Pilot's License

By:

Getting your pilot's license isn't as easy as some may think. There is more to it than simply taking lessons and flying the plane. There are steps you have to take to ensure you are getting your license the right way. There are dozens and probably even hundreds of flight schools that will take your money and not teach you everything you need to know, but are you really sure you want to fly not knowing more than simply the basics? Here are eight steps that will help you along:

1.Before you actually begin looking for a flight school, take an introductory flight with a local flight school. This will let you know whether piloting a plane is really for you and whether you should waste your money on classes.
2.Talk to several pilots. Many of the pilots at small airports will talk to you and let you know what to expect. Question them on all the aspects of flying so you can better prepare yourself for your training. You wouldn't want any surprises now would you?
3.Choose the flight school that will give you the instruction you feel you need before flying solo. Remember the schools that will simply take your money? Don't fall into their trap, choose carefully and do your homework before selecting your flight school.
4.Sign up for approval from the Federal Transportation Services. Since 9/11 everyone interested in flight lessons must first be approved by the FTS. You can find out more information on this through your selected flight school.
5.Select the type of certificate you are going for. There are several to choose from including private, recreational or sport. Your chosen school will be able to instruct you on the differences in the certificates.
6.Choose an aircraft type. There are some forms of aircraft that do not require a license to operate such as an airship, balloon and gliders. It is still a good idea to get lessons from a qualified FAA instructor. Training in a small aircraft gives you the ability to fly locally on short flights, the more you intend on flying the more instruction you will need.
7.Flight school is expensive but if you budget your money and time you can make it work. Decide how much your flight instructor will cost per hour, aircraft rental and fuel. This will help you determine how often you can fly and will be easier to schedule your lessons.
8.If you haven't done so already you must have a physical by a licensed FAA physician. Once you have done this, you will get a student pilot certificate.

Getting your pilot's license may not be as easy as it sounds but once you have them you will be more than happy you went through the trouble. Once you have your license you can apply for other special licenses such as an instrument rating which you can discuss with your instructor. It does require more training and lots of hard work.
