7 Things To Remember When Out On The Water

By:

Suncream

Being out on the water is a magical experience, but don't let your day be spoiled by not protecting yourself from the sun. It's easy to forget the sun's harsh effects when one is cool and contented in the water, but one will surely know the following day, if sunscreen isn't used.

Sun Protection

Protecting oneself from the sun doesn't stop with suncream. A rash shirt will protect one's shoulders and back all day. A hat may also be advisable. Wearing a hat may be no problem when paddling about on a lagoon, but you might need to be prepared to fetch your hat after catching a wave, if the surf's up at the beach. Surf style caps that fasten around the neck solve this issue.

Paddle Board to Your Ability

Going out for your first stand up paddle surf in huge waves might not be the best of ideas. It's worth trying it out in small surf or on flat water until one gets used to it. As you gain confidence you can attempt to stand up paddle board in more challenging surf conditions.

Surf Etiquette

Everyone wants to be on a wave, but waves need to be shared between all board riders. It is therefore important that surfers, body-boarders and stand up paddle boarders all adhere to the established etiquette of the surf. Whoever has the deepest position to be first on a wave has right of way. Other board riders need to give way. Fortunately, nature keeps on serving up wave after wave, so be patient and your turn will come.

Watch Out for Other Boarders

In addition to giving way to those that have right of way on a wave, it is also important to be aware of other board riders in one's vicinity. The last thing one wants to do is put a ding in your and others' precious boards, or cause an injury through a collision.

Fatigue

Make sure you take a break when tiredness starts to set in. Lying down on your board "out the back" past where the surf is breaking can help one regain strength without having to return to the shore. If you are out exploring on a lake or river, don't venture too far away from safety. If you can still see the shoreline or the edge of a tributary, then one should be able to get back for a rest.

Have Fun!

This one should come naturally. Keeping the above tips in mind is important, but so is enjoying yourself. Concern for your health, safety, and others' safety while stand up paddle boarding will make your experience fun as well as worry free. The use of paddle boards has taken the world by storm, and it's easy to see why this fun sport is taking off.
