7 Steps For Turning Your Problems Into Goals

By:

In your life you will encounter difficulties and obstacles to getting what you really want. It's how you react to them that will determine how much they really affect you. Having a positive attitude will definitely help but it's taking positive action that will really help you to get over your troubles.

But sometimes that's not easy and knowing what course of action to take is hard to define. So how do you find the right thing to do?

Well you should have goals that are designed to achieve the things that you want in the various aspects of your life. But just because you have already set goals it doesn't mean you can't add more. A goal is simply a means of focusing on the things you wish to accomplish - they can be long-term aspirations; they can be medium-term, such as what you want to do in the next month or two; or they can be short-term.

It is these short-term goals that will ensure that you take those all important steps each day and each week. And it is they, too, that you can use to overcome the challenges that life throws at you.

If you have a problem turn it into a goal to resolve it. Grab a pen and some paper and take the following steps, writing down what you identify at each stage:

- First you must define exactly what the problem is. What effect is it having on your life and what is it preventing you from doing?

- Then identify clearly what the desired outcome would be as the result of solving the problem. You must be sure that this is realistic and achievable.

- Identify what is causing the problem. Is there someone else involved? What outside influences are there? Or is it down to something you need to change about yourself? Be sure to be honest and precise.

- Define what would need to change to get from where you are now to where you want to be. It may be something simple or it could be a whole list of things and you must know exactly what they are.

- Write down what the first thing is that you need to do to start resolving your problem. Then look at where that would take you and decide upon the next step. Continue doing so until you reach your desired outcome. You may end up with one or two simple things that you need to do or maybe a whole project with many steps. Either way you now have a positive plan of action.

- Turn your plan into a "Smart" goal - remember it should be, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-constrained.

- Write down your new goal and start working on it.

Not all the difficulties in life will be easy to overcome, and sometimes you may need to accept that what is realistic or achievable is less than your ideal. But if you have a positive written goal to overcome it, you will have a plan and the motivation to achieve your desired result.
