7 Important Resume Facts You Ought To Know

By:

Writing a resume can be downright confusing to say the least. If you begin looking around the internet in particular for help on writing a resume you may find the information to be very conflicting. Here are some facts you should know when writing your resume, that have been tested to ensure success.

Follow these general guidelines to ensure you get a look in with your resume:

Fact 1

If you are a student, it is expected that you keep your resume to 1 or 2 pages at the most. Highlight your transferable skills (from after school, or school activities) that would be of benefit to the employer in the first section followed by education.

Fact 2

If you have been in the workforce for some years try and limit your resume to 3 pages and if you have had many jobs and some irrelevant to the position then leave some of them out (so as not to overwhelm or confuse) the reader as to your personal skill set.

Fact 3

If you are an specializing in IT, engineering or project management, then your resume is expected to have additional information set out clearly such as:

* IT platforms used (developed, maintained or used)
* Project management information (project team size, budget, complexity)
* Engineering (technologies engineered and level of involvement)

Fact 4

You should include an objective even if some resume sites say not too. It is one of the criteria (included with cover letter) used to eliminate applicants who do not adhere to basic resume formats. The objective should state why you are wishing to gain the position. Keep it simple.

eg. - "I wish to gain a full time position within the area of reception administration within a large reputable business which will allow me to fulfill my passion by utilising my highly organisation skills and friendly phone manner"

Fact 5

Keep your format simple, neat by using consistent font, lists and minimal color. Fancy resumes are often seen as a mask for lacking skill set.

Fact 6

Use keywords from the industry to highlight your compatibility to the role. If possible adjust your resume for individual applications if the wording varies greatly.

Fact 7

State a short line advising why you left a position if it was a short time period or if you have a lot of job changes. Reasons like offered promotion, increased pay, business winding down are all perfectly reasonable reasons. Finally, check the spelling and grammar to ensure your resume is perfect! Good luck with your job
