7 Essential Items All Bearded Dragon Cages Should Include

By:

All bearded dragon cages need to have accessories before they go from a box, to a beautiful habitat. There are endless amounts of reptile product to choose from at your local pet stores, and even more can be found online. The problem for a beginner is knowing which items are necessary, and which items are safe for your bearded dragon.

  1. Substrate - This is one of the most debated issues when it come to keeping beardies. Many argue over the safety issues involved with using "loose" substrates like sand that can be ingested and cause a potentially fatal blockage of the digestive tracks. I choose to play it safe so I will only be suggesting "solid" materials here.

Use newspaper or reptile carpet for young dragons. For adults you can continue to use the carpets and paper, but many have found tile easier to maintain.

  2. UV Source - Your lizard needs the proper amount of UV light that produces vitamins within their body. Use a long fluorescent bulb that stretches the length of the enclosure.

  3. Basking Light - A basking area needs to be provided to ensure proper thermoregulation for your dragon. This can be a regular light bulb, or a reptile-specific halogen. Cage size, room temperatures and air flow all make a difference as to what size bulb will suit you.

  4. Something to Climb - This can be rocks, branches, or even hammocks. Beardies love to climb and perch in the wild, so we must try our best to give them this satisfaction while in captivity.

  5. Shelter/Hide - A nice place to get out of the extreme heat and light is another necessary item to help your lizard with thermoregulation, and a better night's sleep.

  6. Thermometer/Hygrometer - You need to have an accurate reading of the hot and cool sides of your habitat, as well as a humidity reading at all times. Spend a couple extra bucks and go digital. Digital thermometers are much easier to read and much more accurate than your normal "stick on" gauge. Most of them will also read and display the humidity percentage.

  7. Food/Water Dishes - This is pretty self-explanatory. Just make sure they are of an appropriate size and have smooth edges to prevent injury.

With these pieces in place, you bearded dragon cage is complete. Of course, you can add other cosmetic items to your taste, but those listed here are the essentials. I would suggest playing around with your light sources until you get the correct temperatures, then bring home your new lizard!
