Stress can be brought on by pretty much anything and everything these days. But one of the most stressful things in not having enough time to do everything we want to do. And yet there are only 24 hours in everyone's day. So why is it that some people seem to find time for everything when we do not?

Time management is one of the most important lessons anyone can learn and everyone should. And learning it means that you can get much more out of every day. And that will reduce the stress in your life. So how can you master the fundamentals of time management?

1. Buy a calendar. This should have enough space for you to list your tasks and a to do list. If you prefer you might like to use a legal notepad. Some folks work well with electronic devices but if you have never used a schedule before, then start with a pen and paper. Once you are used to working with the schedule, you can try digital scheduling, such as Outlook. This can be a useful to synchronize your cell phone and your laptop and keep everything up to date.

2. Organize your tasks according their importance. Tasks can be important or urgent, both or neither. Prioritize your tasks according to how urgent and important they are. Plan to do the urgent and important tasks first. This will allow you to complete each task at the right time.

3. Complete your tasks in order of priority. Go through your list of tasks and put a completion date next to them. You could use "A" for everything which needs to be completed this morning, "B" to items which need to be completed before tomorrow, and "C" next to items which must be completed this week. Or you could use whatever system you wish.

4. Stick to your day plan. If an emergency comes up, you can move less important items to another day, but you should never cancel your whole plan for that day. Make notes about items delegated to others.

5. Tick off tasks that are done. You can make another mark next to items that must get postponed to tomorrow. Remember to shift items not done today to tomorrow's list.

6. Allow space at the bottom of your schedule for less important items or things coming up later. If you have time today you can begin working on those items to get ahead.

7. Set your schedule system to accommodate personal lifestyle and tasks.

Incorporate your personal and family time into your schedule. Seeing items on a schedule will make you more aware of what time is available and what things you should do.

If you are new to keeping a schedule give yourself time to learn how to make the system work for you. Everyone does something slightly different. Find out what works for you and what schedule suits your lifestyle. Treat your time as valuable. Keeping a schedule will allow you to be efficient with your time and get more done. And getting more done will reduce your stress.
