6 Simple Steps To Clean And Organize Your Closet - Stage 1

Depending on the length of time that you have been using your closet, or closets, the amount of clutter that has been stored, hidden and stashed will vary, but the strategy for cleaning and organizing any closet that has been used for a year or more will be the same. A tidy and organized closet is not only functional but it also saves time and money.

The hardest part of any project, especially cleaning something that has a door on it that you can close, is getting started. Here are 6 simple steps that will take you through Stage 1 of getting your closet into an organized work of art where everything has a place and there is a place for everything.

1.) Set aside at least an hour for every 3' x 4' area of closet that you are going to organize. Your average single door coat closet is 3' x 4', a typical double door bedroom closet is 6' x 4' and an average walk-in closet is 8' x 6' or 48 sq.ft.

2.) Get three bins or garage bags. Have a bin for throw away, one for give away and one for those items you want or need to keep.

3.) Pull everything out of the closet, one item at a time. Make a quick decision as you touch that possession which bin or bag it will go into. I completely embrace the idea of touch it once and make a "now" decision, this is a real time saver. Keep in mind during this step, if you forgot you had it, it is most likely time for it to go somewhere else.

4.) Once everything is out of the closet and its respective pile, take the trash bin out and empty it, put the give-away bin by the front door and start visually assessing the various items you have decided to keep.

5.) Now completely clean the inside of the closet. Top to bottom. Get all of the dust and cobwebs out. Vacuum the floor and the corners, again top to bottom. Wipe down the interior of the walls and the door with a multi-purpose cleaner. Not only will you have a clean slate to work with when you are done, but you will also have a good feel for the closet space you are about to organize. If time permits, this is a good time to repaint.

6.) The final step to stage 1 of the cleaning and organization process, is to look over those items that you quickly decided that you needed, or wanted, to keep; see if there is anything else that can be donated or tossed and do just that.

If there is no time left in your day for stage 2 of the process, take 20 to 30 minutes and replace all of your "keepers" back in the closet. Hang your clothes either seasonally or by style and type. Completing this stage will at least have provided you with a clean and organized closet that you will look forward to seeing every day as your feet hit the floor to take on the world.
