5 Top Tips For Decorating Small Spaces

By:

Creating a design for a room that is to your taste visually and that also works for you on a practical level can be difficult but especially so when that space is small. You will be faced with many choices in terms of furniture and decoration and the decisions you make will ultimately decide the success of your room design. In effect there will be certain functions you need your room to provide and in this regard clever use of the space means that you don't necessarily need to compromise on function. You can still achieve the look you want by allowing your space to multitask. The following tips should help you achieve a design scheme that you are more than happy with.

1.Use Light Colors

Using light colors for the primary aspects of your design such as walls, floors and furniture will give the impression of greater space. You can use darker colors in your accessories or on an accent wall for example.

2.Transparent Furniture

By choosing clear glass or perspex furniture pieces they will become almost invisible as light passes through them. This will leave your space looking and feeling less cluttered.

3.Select Multifunctional Furniture

Where possible I would advise you to choose pieces of furniture that serve more than one purpose. This could be a coffee table that has some concealed storage, for example.

4.Select Furniture that Can be Stacked or Folded

Furniture that is stackable or foldable can be invaluable if you are tight on space. If you need your living room to also serve as a dining room, you might choose a dining table that folds down and some chairs that are either stackable or that can fold. This means that you can "put away" your dining area when you are not eating and get a greater benefit from the space a solid table would take up.

5.Use Mirrors

By placing large mirrors cleverly, you can create the illusion of a much larger space. You may decide to place a large mirror opposite the entrance of the room or at the very end of a room for example. You could also consider a mirrored wall, depending on your design scheme. This will give the appearance of greater depth.

Space is at a premium these days and we often don't have as much room space as we would ideally like. This does not mean that we have to compromise on style and function. There can be challenges but the rewards of overcoming these challenges and creating a room that we love can be great.
