5 Things You Really Need To Know About 'hidden' Sugars

By:

How much do we know about the foods and liquids we put into our bodies? I bet if youre anything like me then not much. We tend to trust food manufacturers and supermarkets completely, but should we?

After reading a book called Natural Alternatives to Dieting by Marilyn Glenville, Im inclined to say that we all trust them too much!

Did you know that no added sugar, low sugar and diet labels tend to mean no added sugar but not no added sweeteners which can be just as bad for you as sugar or in some cases worst.

The American Cancer Society has had a very interesting finding within their research; regular users of artificial sweeteners tend to gain weight and not lose it. A little known fact is that sweeteners can slow down the digestive process and increase the appetite.

Some manufacturers break down the sugars into various forms when describing their ingredients to make the sugar content appear less although the effect is the same.

Here is a list of sugars followed by a list of artificial sweeteners taken from the Natural Alternatives to Dieting by Marilyn Glenville.

Words ending in ose are sugars.

Sucrose Common table sugar made from sugar cane or beet
Fructose Fruit sugar
Glucose Body blood sugar, fast acting
Dextrose Sugar from corn starch, chemically identical to glucose
Lactose Milk sugar
Maltose Sugar made from starch

Artificial sweeteners include:

Acesulfame K Made with sulphur and nitrogen. It was developed in 1967 and is about 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is used in soft drinks, preservatives, yoghurts, canned foods and confectionery
Aspartame Made from two amino acids. Often sold under the brand names Nutrasweet and Candrel. First discovered in 1965 and is about 180 times sweeter than sugar. It is used in soft drinks, yoghurts, chewing gum, ice cream, salads, alcoholic drinks, hot drink mixes and dry mix desserts
Saccharin Made from petroleum materials discovered in 1937 and is about 300 times sweeter than sucrose. It is used in soft drinks, canned foods, salad dressings, ice lollies, confectionery and pharmaceuticals including over the counter drugs
Thaumatin Made from ketemfe, an African plant, and developed in 1968. It is about 2,000 times sweeter than sugar and is found in chewing gum

There is not an awful lot known about the health issues of eating lots of artificial sweeteners but the US Centre for Science in the Public Interest called for a ban on the sweetener acesulfame K because it was believed to be carcinogenic.

So what you need to consider is that the eating of these individual sweeteners may not be good for our health and may impede on our own natural weight loss but also about the harmful chemical cocktail that we are feed our bodies on.

I have found it interesting to go through my kitchen cupboards and shocked by the amount of produce that contains the artificial sweeteners. I want to work in harmony with my body and my familys bodies so from now on I will be paying more attention when I do my food shopping.
