Becoming a medical transcriptionist is not difficult. In fact, the career can be very rewarding once you get into it. You can have the knowledge that you are helping others in a way while earning a viable income from home. There are five main things you need to do to become a medical transcriptionist.

1.Become a good typist. You need to have typing speeds of well over eighty words per minute in order to be a successful transcriptionist. You can improve your typing speeds through practice, typing tutor software, or online typing games.

2.Enroll in a medical transcription course. These courses are usually only six to nine months long, and end with a certificate of completion. During the course you will learn what formats are common for medical transcription documents. You will also learn basic medical terminology and abbreviations that will be used by doctors in their recordings.

3.Purchase a medical dictionary. This tool will prove invaluable to you as you begin your career as a medical transcriptionist. In fact, no transcriptionist should be without one. You will refer to it constantly as you type the doctors' notes into the word processor. Many medical terms are not recognized by spell checkers and therefore you have to check your spelling of many terms in the dictionary instead.

4.Purchase a foot pedal and transcription software. This is necessary for you to be able to do medical transcription from home. The software will allow you to use the pedal while you are listening to audio sent by the doctors. The pedal allows you to start, stop, rewind and slow down the speed of the recording as you type.

5.Locate doctors to work with or join a medical transcription firm. It can be easier to find a firm that takes transcription from many offices than to find doctors to do transcription on your own. However, if you find doctors to do transcription on your own outside of a firm you will likely make more money. The choice is ultimately up to you.

As you can see, it is not difficult to become an at home medical transcriptionist. If you want to work in a doctor's office, you simply need to skip the last two steps and instead find yourself employment in a traditional office setting. This can be difficult in this day and age, however, as many more doctors are outsourcing their transcription to firms and home workers.
