5 Steps To A Healthy Relationship

By:

Being in a relationship can be a roller coaster of emotions. It may be scary, exciting, and a little crazy, but it's almost always worth the ride. If you want to insure that you have a fun and healthy relationship, consider these five steps which have been shown to benefit both partners.

Spend Time Together

One of the reasons many relationships fail is due to couples not spending enough time together. This only increases the older we get, as we have other important obligations, such as work, family, and friends. If you find that you and your significant other aren't spending enough time together, try and take steps to improve this. For example, see if you can schedule a date night once a week, or simply meet for coffee on your lunch break.

Spend Time Apart

Just as spending time together is important, so is spending time apart. There's an old saying that "absence makes the heart grow fonder" and many couples are finding that this is true. Even couples who have been married for 50 years don't spend every waking minute together. It's simply not healthy. Each person should have their own group of friends and hobbies that they enjoy. After all, if couples were together 24/7, they wouldn't have anything to talk about.

Support One Another

You can't be in a healthy relationship with someone who is constantly cutting you down. In order for a relationship to thrive, you need support. Even a simple kind word of encouragement before a job interview can mean a lot to someone. Simply put, treating others how you'd want to be treated can go a long way in a relationship.

Don't Be Stubborn

Disagreements are bound to happen when you're dating someone, but in order for a relationship to be healthy, you shouldn't be stubborn about it. That means no holding a grudge or refusing to admit when you're wrong. Talk it out and apologize, this way there's no hurt feelings.

Be Honest

One of the most important steps in having a healthy relationship is to be honest. You should always be honest about your expectations. Don't expect a one night stand to be the person you marry. If you're looking for a serious relationship, state that up front. You should also avoid lying about who you are. Never pretend to be someone you're not, because if your significant other truly cares about you, they'll love you no matter what.
