5 Reasons To Have A Garage Sale While Moving

By:

Moving isn't so bad. Actually, it is pretty fun once you know where you are going, how you are getting there and are awaiting the magical day. What does stink is trying to pack everything, making sure you don't miss any knick-knacks and other small items that need to be carted along behind you.

The big furniture isn't that hard to move because you can see it, it gets in your way and is quite cumbersome, but what about all those small items just sitting around collecting dust?

You could do what most people do while moving; try to figure out which box to pack what trinket in so that it doesn't break on the journey, then get frustrated with continuously finding more items, give up and dump half of your house into the garbage can outside. Why stress yourself by dealing with all the small stuff at the last possible moment?

A garage sale or yard sale is a great way to get rid of all the clutter that is hindering your move. Not to mention, it puts all of the small items in sight, just like the bigger items. Here are five reasons why it is a good idea to have a garage sale while moving.

1. Get rid of excess and useless stuff. Here is the rule, if you haven't looked at it or touched it within six months; chances are you probably don't need it. Clean out the clutter now and you won't have to worry about it later. Not to mention, a house looks more open when showing if there is not a lot of clutter around.

Simplicity is the key, especially if you are trying to sell your house. When all of your stuff is on shelves and all over the house, the eye appeal will decrease because potential buyers will not be able to see past what you already have there. Give them a blank canvas to paint their mind with and to start making memories of their own. Cleaning out the clutter will also give you a chance to get a deeper clean, which is another important aspect of selling a home.

2. Wondering where you are going to get the money to pay for the moving truck? A garage sale will help alleviate, if not completely solve, that problem. You may also make enough to help support some extra bills and payments while in transition between living spaces. Some people use garage sales over periods of time to save up for a down payment on their next house.

Raising money can take a lot of the stress off the idea of moving because that is one less thing you have to worry about. The key is to make sure you have all of your sale items out. The more things you can have on the tables, the more money goes into your pocket so do not hold back when it comes to getting rid of old items.

3. If you enjoy packing up every little detail of your life over the past few years, then by all means, do so. If you are like the majority of the world's population, packing will be a chore and the less stuff you have to pack, the better off you will be.

Having a garage sale reduces the amount of stuff you have to pack by almost a third, if you do it correctly. By selling all of the things you haven't looked at or touched in the last six months, you will be ridding your life of packrat syndrome, thus making the move less stressful.

4. Garage sales can deepen family bonds. Every person is giving up things in his or her life that they have been holding on to. Make the garage sale a family event and even split the profits with people whose stuff sells. Everyone will chip in and realize that they are all making the move easier and starting over fresh at the new place.

5. Garage sales help with a lot of things personally, whether it is cleaning out the clutter and getting ready to move or just bringing in some additional funds. Whatever doesn't sell can also make a huge difference.

Any items not sold by the end of the garage sale can be donated to shelters or numerous other non-profit businesses in your area. Check your local yellow pages to find places that will accept these donations and make a difference in the life of someone else.

Place an ad in your newspaper, gather your belonging and start your garage sale today.
