5 Must-Have Home Security Devices For Your Home

By: Pat Stevens

Home security protection is now an affordable solution for everyone. Not only does your home need protection, more importantly, your family does as well. Nothing is worse than your home being robbed while you are away, except perhaps for it to be burglarized when you are in the house. Protecting your home from burglars can be done effectively if you install the right equipment. There is a huge array of reliable and relatively inexpensive security devices that you can have installed, but exactly what you want to install depends on your budget and specific requirements. The general rule is: the more secure, the better.

Of the many types of security devices available, and there are many, the following five should definitely be at the top of your list.

1) Home security and management system
This ultramodern security system is the best solution to ensure that your home is safe, both when you’re away and when you’re in the house. This system allows you to not only secure the entire house, but also to secure individual zones within the house, such as separate floors or garage. Coupled to a number of motion sensors, you can set passwords to activate and de-activate the system.

2) Secure doors and windows
Another must is to ensure that all your doors and windows are secure. Use strong and sufficient locks. Doors and windows can be fitted with additional security devices such as sensors and alarms that sound when they’re forced open or the glass is broken.

3) Digital video security cameras
A Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system allows you to keep an overview of everything that’s happening around your home. Especially if you have a large home with extra land, this system will help you to keep an eye on your whole property including vulnerable, dark, tucked-away corners. The security cameras used don’t have to be large, eye-catching devices, although many people prefer these for their deterrent properties. The most modern digital cameras are not much larger than a mobile phone and can take both videos and snapshot pictures. One or more home security monitors showing live images can be placed anywhere in the house and you can record the images for replaying and reviewing later.

4) Motion sensor lights
By placing a number of motion sensor lights around your house and yard, you will greatly enhance the security of your property as well as your peace of mind. Automatically activated lights will scare away any unwanted visitors trying to enter your grounds, while at the same time they can alert any neighbors to suspicious activity.

5) Mace and pepper spray
Although this is a personal safety device, it should form part of your security package. Mace or pepper spray is highly effective to deter attackers, both out on the street and in your home. If the unthinkable happens despite your best efforts and someone manages to get into your home, a well-aimed shot of mace or pepper spray will do the trick and give you time to alert the police.

These five home security devices will provide ample protection for the average home. The main objective of a security system is to deter potential burglars. Home security systems should be installed not in the hopes that it will be used but rather for preventative measures.
