Taking regular exercise and eating a healthy diet are both great things to do in order to keep your weight under control and keep fit. With that being said, it's a fact that not all foods are created equally and there are some foods that can help me lose weight. Not only can they help me, but they can help you as well.

Before I give you this list of super foods, I want to give you a warning about foods you may be eating which are causing you to actually gain weight and increase your body fat stores. As you may or may not be aware, any foods that cause your insulin levels to "spike" as a result of raised blood sugar, not only means your body more readily stores those calories as fat but you also have urges to consume this type of food with alarming regularity.

It is any small wonder that bread is often seen as a comfort food? Things such as whole grains and cereals which people may have said are good for your weight, do in fact cause these spikes that you don't really want if you are looking to slim down.

In this article I have uncovered 5 foods that will give you the edge in helping you achieve your weight loss goals, so without further ado here they are.

1) Whole Eggs - One of the things I really like about eggs is the fact they are a really high quality source of protein. Don't throw away the yolk either because that is actually the best part that contains vitamins and minerals. Consuming an egg with the yolk keeps your appetite in check and does a wonderful balancing act with your hormones to assist your body in burning fat. If you can afford it, spend your money on free range organic eggs as they have the most nutritional benefit.

2) Avocados - This is a true super food, filled to the brim with all the good stuff including vitamins, minerals and fiber for your body. Because this fruit contains lots of healthy fats and micro-nutrients, it helps your body to keep those hormones in a state of balance suitable for burning fat. This super fruit also satiates your appetite so you aren't going to give in to your cravings.

3) Nuts - Don't listen to people that tell you that you shouldn't eat nuts because they are full of fat. Yes, it's a food that does contain high levels of fat, they can in actual fact really help your body burn off fat. I know that sounds a little weird when you first hear it, but it's totally true. It's because the fats in nuts are the healthy variety. You may not be aware, but nuts also help to ensure plentiful levels of fat burning hormones in your system.

So what kinds of nuts are the best to eat? If you choose almonds, pistachios and pecans you will not go far wrong. Mix up your intake by eating some of each type of nut and you will get the benefit of more vitamins, minerals and a better balance of the types of fats you consume.

4) Berries - When I say berries, I am talking about strawberries, blueberries and the Goji berry. All of these berries are a fantastic source of natural antioxidants and fiber. It's the fiber in the berries which stops your insulin levels from going through the roof, so your sugar levels are effectively controlled.

5) Green Tea - Okay, so strictly speaking green tea isn't a food, but you still consumer it and I couldn't leave it off this list because of all the wonderful properties it has including the ability to oxidize fat. Studies have shown that if you drink five cups of green tee per day, you would burn an average of 70-80 calories through thermogenic heat production in the body. If you were to do this and nothing else, after just 43 days you would have lost a pound in weight. Although on its own that sounds modest, it's quite impressive considering all you do is drink a few cups per day to achieve this.
