5 Common Migraine Triggers

By:

If you are a migraine sufferer, you will probably recognise some of these 5 common migraine triggers, however not every trigger will be applicable to every sufferer because what may be a trigger for one person may not necessarily be a trigger for somebody else.

These common triggers can include emotional factors such as stress, change of daily routine, hormonal changes in women. Food or lack of food is another factor often blamed for triggering a migraine. Low fluid intake or in other words dehydration can also have an effect.

Migraine and Stress

Stress is considered a strong link to a migraine attack. Included in this category is anxiety, excitement plus any type of tension or shock.

Migraine and Daily Routine

This is a somewhat varied migraine trigger where the slightest change in a daily routine could in some circumstances contribute towards a migraine attack. Changes in sleep patterns can have an effect, changes to a daily routine because of a long journey may provoke an attack

Migraine and Sleep

This is a double-edged sword with regards to the connection between migraine and sleep, on one hand too much sleep can induce an attack, but also too little sleep has the same effect. Sleepless nights or too many late nights can be an issue, because both of these can a have detrimental effect resulting in being over tired, which in turn can trigger a migraine. Having a lie-in in the morning or a nap in the afternoon may also result in triggering a migraine.

Migraine and Food

There a number of factors that can link migraine to food and contrary to popular belief its not all about what is eaten or drunk. Factors can include fasting or skipping meals, low fluid intake resulting in a form of dehydration. Many of todays foods contain additives and preservatives such as MSG (monosodium glutamate) nitrates, aspartame and not forgetting tyramine which is a natural substance found in aged foods like cheese. It can also be found in alcohol and citrus fruits. It is worth remembering that foods can have a varying effect with different people and for some food might not be trigger at all.

Migraine and Exercise

The connection between migraines and exercise has long been argued with many experts claiming exercise is harmful to those who are prone to migraines. Recent research however shows that a sensible approach to exercise can help reduce or prevent migraine attacks. It must be pointed out that strenuous exercise can and will trigger a migraine attack if you are dont normally exercise to any degree.
