5 Common Anxiety Disorders That You Should Be Aware Of

By:

Anxiety disorders, and the associated panic attack symptoms, are becoming more and more common. A scary trend however, recently reported in the media, is that as many as 13% of young people, aged 9 to 17, have been diagnosed with some form of panic disorder and experience anxiety symptoms.
In order to correctly ascertain or at least make an educated guess, whether you, your child, or someone else in your family is experiencing panic attack symptoms, and what kind of disorder they may have, it is useful to know what the five main types of panic disorders are.
Panic disorder
This is the classic, well-reported panic disorder, involving panic attack symptoms including shortness of breath, palpitations, sweaty palms and a feeling of impending doom.
Classically, these symptoms can be experienced during daytime hours, or as nocturnal episodes, where panic symptoms wake sufferers from their sleep.
Generalized anxiety disorder
Generalized Panic Disorder (GAD) sufferers experience similar panic attack symptoms, however, since this disorder is characterized by a perfectionist approach to life, and sufferers are more likely to be aware of their anxieties, they may cope with symptoms a little better.
This disorder is slightly more prevalent among males, and begins gradually. Although anxiety symptoms are experienced, these may be milder than those classic panic attack symptoms.
Social anxiety disorder
Social anxiety disorder is interesting in that it usually relates to specific fears of a particular place or event, for example, school phobia, or a fear of public speaking, although the severity of the disorder may vary.
Sufferers will experience some panic attack symptoms related to the places or actions which they fear, which eventually leads to their isolating themselves from their peers, and from strangers, and often, to the development of depression.
This type of anxiety attack, and the associated anxiety symptoms, are equally common amongst males and females, and has a relatively high (around 4%) prevalence among young people.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a disorder where a sufferer of anxiety symptoms, or panic symptoms, develops irrational or inappropriate rituals, which the sufferer transfers their everyday anxiety to. For example, excessive hand washing, or repeating certain words, in a chant like fashion.
While this may seem like a harmless coping mechanism for dealing with everyday issues, sufferers still experience anxiety symptoms, when their rituals are interrupted or prevented.
Separation anxiety disorder
A combination of agoraphobia and classic panic attack symptoms, this type of anxiety disorder affects mainly children. This type of panic has its own anxiety symptoms, including stomachaches and headaches, and may lead to the child refusing to go to school.
Left untreated, Separation Anxiety Disorder may lead to the development of General Anxiety Disorder, and the associated panic attack symptoms.
This disorder is characterized by an abnormal worry about being away from home, or parents.
Whatever anxiety symptoms you or your loved ones are experiencing, it is advisable to seek appropriate panic treatment as soon as possible, as anxiety cures may take some time, and the more advanced the panic symptoms, the longer panic treatment may be required for, and the more intensive it may need to be.
