4 U.s. Techno Festivals Not To Miss

By:

As May approaches, so too does the annual festival for techno music in Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is known mostly for its advent of the automobile, but a close second would be the music scene. Detroit has been on the cutting edge of sound since the Motown era with artists like Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, straight through to the present day where Kid Rock and Eminem employ a large radio presence.

What about techno? Techno has bent ears and thumped speakers in almost every country around the world, is played nightly at clubs and is celebrated by millions of listeners and yet remains in an almost underground state since its creation. Pop culture and radio alike prefer something catchy lyrically speaking, leaving many talented artists out of the limelight. Despite this fact, techno fans from around the world come together to celebrate this style of music and hold several festivals throughout the year.

DEMF/Movement (Detroit, Michigan)

Starting with the hometown of techno, we have the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, also known as DEMF, which is now referred to as Movement. This event became an annual attraction at Detroits Hart Plaza in the year 2000 and has spun on every Memorial Day weekend since.

The first techno event to hit the city was in 1994, entitled World Party after the World Cup of soccer was held near Detroit that year. World Party was less successful but laid the groundwork for what would become a very popular concert series. Records indicate that in DEMFs first ten years, several million fans were drawn to this event. The buzz has already begun to spin about Movement 2011 in the underground techno scene and much anticipation is awaiting this years three day techno extravaganza.

World Electronic Music Festival (Ontario, Canada)

Next up is World Electric Music Festival. This three day music festival is got its start in southern Ontario, Canada in 1995 and was Canadas longest running music festival in 2008, when it was announced that it would be the last. After taking a two year sabbatical, news was released that the event would return again this summer in a secret location somewhere in Ontario. Fees are reportedly higher this year in order to import a more impressive lineup.

Electric Zoo Festival (New York City, NY)

Moving further east will take us to the city of New York, which is home to the Electric Zoo Festival. After debuting only two years ago in the fall of 2009, this festival has continued to grow in popularity and has received many awards. Electric Zoo was dubbed Best U.S. Festival and Best Music Event. Following in the wake of its success, the festival has announced that it will add another day to its 2011 activities, bringing it to three days this Labor Day weekend.

Ultra Music Festival (Miami, FL)

Were taking it to the beach on our final stop of North American techno festivals. This stop finds us on one of the best party beaches in the world - none other than South Beach in gorgeous Miami, Florida. Ultra Music Festival combines techno music with an already enthusiastic party environment. This mix was good news to its producers, who were able to resign the event immediately following its first outing. Like the rest of the shows listed, Ultra Music Festival has become an annual affair and also added a third day to its 2011 show this past March due to popular demand.

Fan base continues to grow after two decades of techno evolution, while more events fill calendars world-wide and DJs continue to spin anywhere and anytime. To the three boys who thought they were on to something in high school - the world is listening.
