4 Tips To Create A Work Of Cake Art!

By:

The past few years have seen a huge boom in popularity of cake art and decorating, thanks in large part to TV shows that feature colorful bakers and their outrageous creations. While not all of us have the ability to create skyscrapers out of batter and fondant, most anyone can learn the basics of cake art, with a few simple tips.

Cake Art Starts with a Vision

1. Before you even bake the first layer, envision the finished cake in your mind's eye. Look at the details like smooth icing, even sides, carefully piped icing and other embellishments. Hold that vision in your mind as you create, so you come closer to your ideal with each step.

2. Give yourself enough time. Don't try your hand at masterful cake decorating 30 minutes before the kids arrive for the party! Work a day ahead if you can, and make sure the house is quiet and you have some uninterrupted time. While it can be great fun to have children help decorate, you aren't as likely to create the work of art you were expecting if you have little hands and fingers in the process.

3. Use good tools. Invest in a good offset spatula, a scraper, cardboard cake boards and a cake turntable. If you plan to use piped icing in your finished design, buy a bag and tips, or parchment cones. As you are creating your beautiful cake, always remember to use the turntable to move around the cake, instead of keeping the cake still. This is the key to smooth icing and a consistent look.

4. Before applying icing, make sure your cake is cold. After cooling on a rack, pop it into the freezer and let it chill. Not only will this make it easier to slice layers if you need to, it will also allow the butter in the icing to adhere to the cake more easily. This makes it so much easier to achieve that beautiful smooth sided look you envisioned in your head.

Remember, like any skill, cake art takes practice and patience. Even if your first few tries don't quite make the mark, your friends and family will surely enjoy eating the results! You'll learn something new with each cake you try, and before long, your cake art will be the talk of the town. Who knows, maybe you'll even have the next TV show!
