4 Things You Should Mind As A Fashion Designer

By:

It is said that one never stumbles on mountains, but on small pebbles. Most of us follow broader guidelines of the industry we work in, but might overlook some matters equally important though not expressly spelled out. The fashion industry has a global audience. As a fashion designer you will have clients and customers from different parts of the world. Your ideas will be based on trends and ideas from all over, and your designs and creations may find place at many different locations in the world. Even sourcing certain materials and part processes may be from overseas.
Operating on such a world stage there are certain things you should keep in mind.

*Cultures: As a fashion designer you will have to meet a number of people from different countries. They may be your clients, retailers, or suppliers. You will have to bear in mind that different countries have very different cultures; a custom in your own country may be outright offensive in some other country. Greeting, dressing and maintaining decorum are things you should be careful about. Ignorance or an inappropriate approach may cost you business.

*Color: You as a designer will put different colors to use based upon trends, season, occasion or what you visualize will look nice. But you must be careful with colors and mind their use in certain situations. In some countries and cultures certain colors are treated as inauspicious, or signify protest, sorrow or mourning. You must make appropriate use of colors if you are organizing a show or targeting audience of a particular location. This becomes more important if you are working for a specific client from a diverse culture.

*Symbols: Symbols are sometimes used in fashion designing. Like colors, you must know about the history of the symbols, especially if they have certain religious, social or national relevance. Many other symbols may be protected and their use without permission can lead to legal issues.

*Copying: This is one subject that has seen endless discussions. Some people from the fashion industry have stated that everything, even designs are inspired by something or the other and that nothing can exist in vacuum. As an ethical designer you must ensure that there is no blatant copying, no matter what pressures you face. Yes, once a trend catches on you will see your company and yourself moving along with it too. But you must inject your own creativity and originality to what you see in front of you to create something unique. It is like a teacher giving all students a common topic to write an essay. All will have the same facts in front, but only the special ones will interpret it differently and come up with something exceptional.

How you conduct yourself and your work says a lot about you. And more often than not, this determines how high you will climb in this industry.
