4 Things You Should Know About Off-shore Catering Jobs

By:

When you think of off-shore oil rig jobs, the last position you will likely think of is that of a cook. However, cooks are very much part of an oil rig crew as the workers have to be fed. So, if you have any sort of experience cooking, then you could get a job as one on an oil rig. Oil rigs need bakers, cooks, head cooks (camp bosses), cleaners and dishwashers. Even if you have no experience, you could get on as a steward and work your way up. The following are a few things you should know when looking for a kitchen job on an oil rig.

*Catering jobs on oil rigs pay very well sometimes double that of a cook on land. A steward with no experience will probably make $45,000 a year. This means that even as a steward, you could be making more money than a chef in a restaurant. A head cook makes about $65,000 annually, while as a cook, you could make $59,000.

*Many oil rigs work one or two weeks on and the same time off. Either way, you will work just six months in the year. As a steward, at the bottom of the ladder, you will be expected to help in the kitchen and look after the crew's living area. As a cook, you could cater to between 200-1,000 workers and do most of the preparation as you will not have many helpers.

*Certification in first aid, off-shore survival and helicopter underwater escape training will be an advantage. You may not be required to have these skills, but it would be a big help. Many employers offer training in these survival techniques. Getting them on your own would give you an edge.

*The first place to start looking for oil rig catering jobs is on the Internet. Another way is to search a newspaper's classified section. The best thing to do, however, is to search oil rig companies' web sites to see if they are hiring, or use their details to contact them directly. You could also use the services of employment agencies.

A job on an off-shore oil rig kitchen is a good way to earn a handsome salary. For those who want to eventually do more than just cook, you can use this job as a launching pad to get into the industry. If you are persevering enough, other opportunities will come your way.
