4 Things Every Graphic Designer Student Must Know About Their Profession

By:

Nearly every graphic designing student graduates with a dream of making it big in the industry. They think their creativity and knowledge is enough to make a mark in the industry. But often a little practical knowledge that they overlook in their enthusiasm about their job throws a spanner in their dreams. So if you are a student of graphic designing, here are some tips that will come in handy, whether you are planning to working for someone or for yourself.

1.Don't waste time with gimmicks: When you are starting off as a graphic designer, often you will feel the need to show off your talents while presenting your ideas to your client. But remember the client's time is very precious; they will be seeing more than one worker before selecting one. So if you spend time in describing the work rather than showing it, the client may get impatient and cut the meeting short. So first of all get to the point and let your creativity speak for it self. Your client will appreciate your professionalism.

2.Do internships in more than one place: There are many industries that employ graphic designers; unless you are very sure about which industry you want to work in, go for internships in various organizations. That way you will learn about the various roles and duties of a graphic designer and see which ones you are best suited for. The industries are always looking for interns because they cost less; however never work for a company that doesn't pay their interns. You will probably not learn anything substantial from such a company.

3.Always ask questions: Don't assume that you have learnt everything from your course. Sometimes what you learn from the books is not applied in the practical work. So if you don't ask questions you will never learn the tricks of the trade.

4.Network, network and network: In the line of graphic designing, it is often the people you know who brings the work and not what you know. So in your college days as well as internship days, build up your list of contacts. This is especially important if you plan to start your own graphic designing firm.

The transition between student life and professional life can be little hard if you are not prepared for the world you are going to work in. So along with your degree, build up your knowledge about the inner working of the industry so that when you join, it is as if you always belonged there.
