4 Softball Coaching Tips You Should Know If Youre A Beginner

By:

A lot of people hate learning new things. But if youre like me, I take new beginnings as a challenge, and I love learning, so its not an issue for me.

As a new coach, youre faced with a new beginning. Youll fumble around for the first few months, but dont worry, youll get the hang of it soon enough.

New beginnings are a great opportunity to learn new things. And while were at it, let me share some softball coaching tips with you to fast track your progress.

1.Invest in coaching books. I admit I can only teach you so much about coaching softball. And so, you still need the insight of other coaches to grasp coaching concepts even better.

Im not just talking about softball coaches here. Try looking up books of coaches from other sports and pay particular attention to their philosophy when it comes to handling their players and always having that winning mindset.

Buying really good coaching books can cost you a pretty penny but if youre serious about becoming a good coach, youll realize that the money you spent arent expenses, but rather an investment.

2.Be certified. Some locations require coaches to have at least a safety certification before taking the job. Some would require even more certifications. So, you better check out your area for requirements on becoming a coach before taking the jump.

Dont worry about these certifications because you usually only need a few hours to complete them. Take the safety certification, for example, which you can complete in just four hours. After that, youre ready to go.

3.Network with other coaches. Just because your team will be competing against another coachs team doesnt mean you and that coach cant be friends. In fact, I recommend that you network with other coaches, especially in your area.

Having other coaches as friends has its advantages. For one, you can ask for tips on things such as handling your team better, solving certain problems in your game, to name a few. And if youre lucky to befriend a very experienced coach, then, this is going to be advantageous on your part. Youll get a far greater insight from them than trying to make it on your own.

4.Be open-minded. You may be the teams coach but you should know how to work with your players. That means you should be open-minded enough to listen to their suggestions on how to run the team better and how to win more games.

Some coaches think that since theyre at the top of the teams totem pole, they can dictate everything and never listen to their players. Dont have this kind of mindset. Because when you do, youll only alienate your players from you.

Becoming a really good softball coach is a very long journey. So if youre in it for the long haul, then, welcome aboard. Even I whos been coaching for over 20 years now feel like Im not there yet when it comes to coaching ability.

What Im getting at here is that if you want to succeed as a coach, keep on learning. Because if you get complacent and the rules start to change, you might find yourself left out of the field.
