4 Reasons Why It's Bad To Blast Spam Emails

By:

It's tempting for new email marketers to consider email marketing spam as an option to help increase their business' success. But experienced email marketers know exactly how bad it is not just to your current campaign, but all future campaigns and even your business. We're going to review four reasons why you should not every consider email spam for use with your campaigns.

1. You could lose all internet service

Internet service providers (ISP) are the ones that give you access to the internet and help police it. Just like any business does, Internet service providers work to ensure that they provide a superior service for their users, and when someone starts blasting large amounts of email spam, it clogs up the network and uses a ton of server resources.

Because of this, ISPs are on a constant lookout for spammers and work hard to shut them down by removing their Internet service and/or taking down their entire website. It also is common for spammers to get sued out of a lot of money by ISPs, especially if the volume is significant. If you begin spamming, you are on a slippery slope to being acted upon by your ISP, and this could easily ruin your business.

2. Your deliverability takes a hit

Popular email services such as Gmail or Hotmail all have mechanisms to protect their own users from spam. If you have ever used one of these programs regularly, you know that there is an option to mark an email as "spam." When enough people mark a message as spam, these email service providers will blacklist future messages sent by the domain.

What does this mean? It means that users also help police the system, and it's easy to identify spam. When you send out poor quality emails and spam, you have a high probability of being blacklisted, meaning that nobody will receive your email messages when you send them.

3. Results in a bad reputation

Of course, this is obvious and needs no explanation. The truth is, people remember you by your email campaigns, and if the last thing people think of about your brand is being annoyed by your spam emails, there is no way they are going to remain a customer. Protect your company's reputation by always sending out quality, opt-in emails.

4. It's unethical

When you send out email spam, you're not only taking up people's valuable time, but your also taking advantage of network resources that other people are paying for. Spam wastes a high percentage of all bandwidth available for worldwide Internet users, and this leads to higher costs for everyone as ISPs split the cost of the extra technical needs among Internet subscribers. This is unethical, and if spammers ceased to exist, Internet access would be much cheaper than it is today.Spamming isn't just bad for yourself and your company, but it's also bad for all Internet users as it takes up people's time and money. The truth is, opt-in email marketing is simple anyway and always leads to better results, as your subscribers are very receptive to your messages. After all, they asked to receive it! Do yourself a favor and hold off on the email spam.
