Now that you have decided to get a degree in nursing, the easy part is done. Next comes the slightly harder part, paying for it. You are aware that money does not, for the most part, grow on trees. But there is good news: the price you pay now for your education should be returned to you ten-fold in future earnings, so it is a wise investment. Luckily funding your education is not as hard as you might think but does take a few, easy to follow steps. Follow these and you will pay for your schooling in no time.

Before you really get into looking for funding it is best to get your Free Application for Federal Student Aid out of the way. This is just a standard form that you are going to need for any federal money and most other types of aid so get it out of the way. Take time to be sure it is complete and accurate and also complete. This will speed things up down the road. Once down you can get started on the hunt for money.

*Grants. These are just education gift from the government and other sources that do not need to be repaid so they should be your first choice. The federal Pell grant is the most common of these but there are more.

*Scholarships (broad). Like grants, these do not need to be repaid. They are awarded on either need, academics, or both. There are thousands of them but not all are easy to find. Some are so obscure that they go unrewarded some years simply because no one applied. It might help to think of scholarships as a lottery, you can't win if you don't play. You probably won't get most of the scholarships you apply for but you only have to receive a few so it is worth the time.

*Scholarships (nursing). There are some scholarships that are only open to nursing students. Some are only open to students in a particular type of nursing. Use the same strategy that you did for the broad scholarships.

*Tax credits. These are available to the person financing your education. It is free money so make sure you take full advantage of them.

These are the ways pay for your schooling for free. There are still student loans and work study programs that may be available to you as well but it is always best to start with the free money first and then move on to those only if you need them.
