4 Long Term Consequences Of Pregnancy In Teenagers

By:

Many countries around the world are experiencing the problem of teenage pregnancy. Going through pregnancy at an early age could cause the teenage parents and their baby to experience many long-term negative consequences. It is crucial to understand what these problems are.

It can cause mental health issues

Many teenage mothers will be extremely stressed and pressured because they are not yet mature enough to go through parenthood. A teen in this situation has a higher risk of experiencing forms of mental illnesses. Mental health problems that are not properly managed can lead to poor decisions and may cause the person suffering to resort to substance abuse. Mental health problems can also be a result of social isolation since teenage mothers usually end up with the responsibility of raising their child alone. She may experience a lack of support or feel alone, which can lead to feelings of regret or, in extreme cases, depression and suicidal tendencies.

It can put teenagers in a difficult financial situation

Teenage parents usually end up suffering financial consequences for a long time. This is particularly true since teenagers are not yet financially independent to face the monetary obligations of starting their own family or having a child. Oftentimes, teenage mothers also have to face other responsibilities like finishing school or employment and all these can further strain the situation. Although a few teenagers have parents who are willing to support them financially, many are less fortunate in that their parents just don't have enough time or money to help out.

The teenager's child might have behavioral problems

A study from the University of Illinois revealed that teenage pregnancy can often lead to child behavioral problems. A lot of teenage mothers are not yet fully equipped with the maturity and parenting skills needed to raise and discipline a child. Because of this, the child might become maladjusted due to lack of guidance. An abusive home life can also lead to behavioral problems. Teenage parents may not be able to properly deal with or vent their feelings about the pressures of their situation and this may result in abusive behavior in the home. Children who experience or are exposed to violence are more prone to rebellious or defiant behavior.

The child may be underdeveloped or suffer from health issues

During pregnancy, many teenage mothers aren't able to have the right level of care that they need. They might be malnourished or not receive the right prenatal care which in turn could have detrimental effects on the unborn baby's health and brain development. Babies born to teenage mothers are at a greater risk of having respiratory problems and other physical disabilities.

Being pregnant at a young age can lead to a lot of negative consequences but the young parents should not lose hope. Teenage parents may still alleviate their situation if they seek proper support and guidance.
