3 Very Good Reasons For Taking Out Travel Medical Insurance

By:

For many of us travel insurance is merely one of several extras that the travel agent will try to get us to add to our holiday package to help boost his profits and make our holiday even more expensive than it needs to be. However, there are three very important reasons for not leaving home without your international travel medical insurance plan tucked safely into your pocket.

First, a travel insurance policy protects you against losing all of your money should an emergency arise and you are forced to cancel your holiday. This is especially true in cases where you are booking your holiday some time ahead because you never know what might happen in the weeks or months leading up to your trip. However, by their very nature emergencies have a habit of appearing at any time and without warning and so this is one form of protection that really should not be considered in terms of time.

It is natural to feel that nothing will ever happen to us but a vacation can frequently involve a significant up-front investment and the loss of this money may well mean that you are unable to re-arrange your holiday at a later date.

Second, a travel insurance policy enables you to meet the cost of medical treatment while you are traveling and while you are on holiday and, if you have a significant illness or accident, will also pay for you and your family to return home if this proves necessary.

Medical care may well be very good at your destination and it might even be considerably less expensive than it is back at home. Nevertheless, a few days in hospital may still lead to a substantial bill that will eat deeply into your holiday spending money. It is also possible that medical treatment at your destination will leave a great deal to be desired and you might well need to cut your vacation short and head back home for the treatment you need.

Third, a travel insurance policy will protect the value of your possessions while you are traveling and abroad so that you will get compensation in the event of loss.

If you are a regular traveler then you will probably have suffered the loss of your luggage at some time and will know only too well just how inconvenient and expensive it is. I shall never forget stopping for a meal on my way to the airport at the end of one particular holiday and carefully locking my bag out of sight in the trunk of my hire car. When I got back to the car roughly thirty minutes later I discovered that somebody had forced the lock on the passenger door and folded the back seat down to access the boot and make off with my suitcase.

I will also not soon forget sitting at a traffic light one hot and sunny day when a motorcycle pulled up beside the car and a boy reached through the open passenger side window and snatched my mother's purse which was lying by her feet on the floor.

Traveling abroad is expensive at the best of times but heading off without adequate insurance can land you with bills which you simply do not have the money to pay. So, the next time you are making plans for a trip remember to add travel insurance to your list.
