3 Tips To Help You Start A Bookkeeping Business

By:

Do you want to start your own bookkeeping business? There are some important tips, which may help you along the way. Even if you have many years bookkeeping experience, starting, running and growing your own business requires new skills and attitudes, which might not have been required as an employee.

Firstly, do you know your own strengths and weakness? This is sometimes difficult to ascertain for yourself as often people see them selves differently to how others do. It is important to understand your own skills and limitations so you can cater for these in your business.

If you have certain strengths, you can capitalize on these in your marketing plan and strategies. For example, you might have extensive experience in the construction industry. If so, find ways to market your services to this group of people and have an edge over your competitors.

What about your weaknesses? It is best to find them out earlier rather than later. You can then be in a position to address any weaknesses and tailor your approach accordingly. You might find you do not have experience in a popular software package. If so, take action and undertake some study, or attend a course. Find ways to address any weakness you might find.

Secondly, it is best to have the correct professional indemnity insurance as a bookkeeper. Many bookkeepers practice without insurance and this can ruin the business or the individual. Professional indemnity insurance will help protect you in the event there is a claim for professional negligence.

The final tip is just as important as the others but it is also often forgotten about especially in times of stress. Tip three is time management and factoring in time to enjoy your family or friends. It is very easy to forget this when you are stressed about getting clients, or having too many clients, or having problems with clients or trying to juggle your own time management.

If you work from home or have a home office, make sure you walk away and see your friends or family. You need down time as well as constructive business time. It is important to separate the workday from your personal time to stay happy and healthy.

Remember being your own boss comes with lots of challenges, but it can also provide you with a good income, a rewarding career, a thriving business and great personal satisfaction for years to come.
