Off-shore oil rig jobs for mud loggers are not easy to come by, unlike entry-level jobs which don't really need much education or experience. If you are looking for a mud logger's job you will firstly have to have the requisite educational qualifications and experience. As a rule, the company contracted to do the oil drilling is different to the one that conducts muglogging. It is also a lonely job and you will have little or no interaction with the rig workers as they will consider you an outsider. Before applying for a mud logger's job, here are a few things you should know.
What is mudlogging?

*Mud logging, also called hydrocarbon well logging, is the collection of rock samples brought up by the drill from different levels of the rig's bore hole. The mud logger then cleans these samples with diesel or water and after examining them under a microscope classifies them according to rock type - limestone, shale, dolomite, sand and so on. He also looks for traces of oil in them. These findings are then noted down, or 'logged' and serves as a graph for rock layers and shows the company's geologist where the oil is most likely to be found.

What are the qualifications needed?

*The qualifications and experience you need for this job will vary from company to company. Larger companies that provide a wide range of services will expect you to have a geology degree or similar certification. Some small companies, however, do hire people right out of high school as apprentices. Nowadays, you will also need to have a working knowledge of computers and electronics.

How much can you earn?

*Once again, this will vary from company to company and the services that are offered by them. Depending on your experience, you will be given a large or small job and you can earn anything between $50,000 and $80,000 a year, plus daily allowances which are between $150 and $300. Many mud loggers are paid on a daily basis, so the longer the job takes the more you can pick up.

Though the pay is very good, this job comes with a lot more pressure that any of the other oil rig jobs. Not considered one of the more prestigious jobs in the oil industry, it is nonetheless an important one and an experienced and alert mud logger can prevent many an accident on the rig.
