3 Things You Need To Do To Become A Certified Ultrasound Technician

One of the benefits of pursuing a career as an ultrasound technician is that you don't need to have a high degree in order to become one. An associate degree or a bachelor's degree is all that is required to become an ultrasound technician or a sonographer. Even though the job responsibilities of an ultrasound technician don't go beyond capturing ultrasound images, a certified technician will have enhanced job responsibilities including producing quality sonographic pattern of body parts, diagnosing, analyzing images and suggesting treatment. This means that a certified ultrasound technician is paid higher than ordinary sonographers.

Certification requires a sonography professional to have hands-on experience in the production of images and diagnosis. Compared to regular sonographers, certified ultrasound technicians are more experienced and in much more demand. There are three main steps to become a certified ultrasound technician.

1.Degree

In its simplest form, the job of a regular ultrasound technician requires one to have an associate degree that can take 2 to 3 years to complete after high school. Or, you can pursue a bachelor's degree that can take as much as 4 years. Having a degree in medical domain is helpful as this would ensure having all the essential knowledge about the human body. Make sure that your degree program has sonography or ultrasound as one of the major subjects.

2.Application for Certification Exam

The next step to get certified is to appear in the examination conducted by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. You can also apply for the exam online. It would be helpful to undergo a training program in the subject as this would help you improve your score.

3.Submitting Clinical Experience Letter

The third step towards certification is to supply the ARDMS with a letter that describes your clinical experience. Such a letter will contain all the information about your degrees and a proof of your clinical program's completion. The submission of the letter offers you the path to become a certified ultrasound technician.

Once you have cleared the exam, you are ready to apply for employment in hospitals, clinics and diagnostic imaging centers. A registered sonographer is certified to have all the knowledge about sonography instruments and their handling, and assessing and diagnosing the images. Even though it can take a little more effort in order to achieve the certification, the rewards are certainly profitable and of long-term effect.
