3 Things You Can Negotiate

By:

Many people are scrambling to find ways to save money these days. Whether you've recently been laid off and are looking for a new job or you have found a new job but it doesn't pay quite what you're used to, you probably could take any savings you could find.

With so many people struggling to provide the necessities to their family and keep their dream homes that they worked so hard for, you have to get creative in the areas where you can save money.

Trimming your eating out budget, not going to the movie theater and other common ways of saving money will only take you so far. You also lose out on a lot of quality time with your friends and family.

There are better ways to cut your budget and not sacrifice your entire lifestyle. Instead of constantly cutting things out of your life, how about just reducing your bills and payments? Who wouldn't want to do that?

There are a few common things out there that you could be negotiating and probably aren't. With a few phone calls and some of your time, you could literally save thousands of dollars without having to live like an Amish person.

Negotiate Your Medical Bills - Lenders and hospitals want to recoup as much of your debts as possible. With so many people filing bankruptcy, hospitals will take whatever you can give them. For example, if you racked up a $10,000 hospital visit due to an unfortunate accident, you could call the hospital and offer them a settlement of $5,000. They may not take it at first but after awhile, they'll be anxious to take whatever they can get.

Negotiate Expensive Purchases - If you're in the market for appliances, furniture, cars or other high ticket items, your salesperson can often give you a break if you just ask for it. Small, locally owned stores are more likely to do this. Big box retailers won't often give their sales team the authority to give you a reduction or it would get out of control. If you were going to spend $5000 for kitchen appliances but could get it down to $4000 by simply asking, why wouldn't you?

Negotiate Your Rent - If you're currently renting an apartment, home or condo, your landlord will likely negotiate with you. It is much simpler for them to resign your contract and keep you for another year at a discounted rate than putting a vacant apartment up for rent and hoping they get full price without losing a month of income. When your contract is coming up, call your landlord and ask for a 5%-10% reduction in exchange for signing a new contract.
