3 Steps Towards A Great List-building Squeeze Page

By:

A squeeze page (aka an opt-in page) is the number one list-building tool in every Internet marketer's arsenal. Here are three essential things you should do with every squeeze page to make it effective.

Focus on one response. Your squeeze page should be all about getting people to sign up for your list. Period.

This means you're not also trying to sell a product or get them to click on any contextual advertising. Nor are you trying to get readers to visit your home page.

You'll want to reflect this in the copy. It should mentally direct your reader towards putting his or her name and email address into the form and clicking the "submit" button.

This should also be reflected in your layout and design. The only ways your reader should be able to navigate off the page should be by hitting either the "submit" button or clicking the "no thank you" link.

Things like affiliate links, contextual ads, or links to other sites give your prospect an opportunity to do something unrelated to your list. You don't want this. (The only exception to this rule is when your header or other "trademark" image links to your home page. That should be the only off-page link.)

Tell them the top benefit(s) of your list. After all, they aren't going to join your list just because you want them to!

While squeeze page copy shouldn't be as long as sales page copy, you do want to list at least a few benefits of joining your list. Tell them how subscribing to your list will make them smarter, thinner, or better looking. Let them know it will help them save on groceries, buy a new house, or look better in front of their friends.

Make sure you tell them how they'll reap these benefits as well. People make decisions based on emotion, but still need to rationalize those decisions with logic. Maybe your list will make them smarter by providing a weekly brain teaser, or help them buy a new house by giving investment tips.

Give something away for free. You're already giving away plenty with your list, right? True enough, but it doesn't hurt to provide some kind of instant gratification to your readers.

For most information niches, a free report makes a great giveaway. Split-testing has shown time and time again that a free giveaway can make or break a list-building campaign. And what better to give away to an information-buying group than free information?

But free reports can work for marketing physical products as well. A report titled, "6 Steps Towards a More Energy Efficient Home" might be good for securing leads you can sell to storm window installers. A report about video game cheats could work well if you're selling video games.

It's also not unheard of to give away cheap, useful software to your list as well. Time clocks, personal calendars, or anything gimmicky and fun might be suitable.
