3 Steps To Avoiding Lost Luggage

3 Steps To Avoiding Lost Luggage

Traveling long distances usually requires careful planning and forethought so that you can get the absolute most out of your journey. One of the most upsetting encounters that can happen, takes place as you near the end of a leg of your journey, just as you are ready to wind down, shower and change and relax. Yes, you are the one still at the baggage claim when the last bag comes through the portal, and it's not yours. Your stomach sinks because now your growing fear seems to be realized. You do one last check of any bags that may have been set aside by handlers and you then make your way to the Baggage Claim desk, all the while, thinking about what it means if you don't get your baggage until the next day, or even worse.

According to the Air Travel Consumer Report by the U.S. Department of Transportation last June 2009, a top ranked airline reported 9.17 mishandled bags per 1000 passengers. Admittedly 0.0917% seems insignificant. That is, until you are one of those statistics.

According to Wikipedia.com, lost luggage occurs when a public carrier, airline, ship, or train fails to get a passenger's luggage to the exact destination. In the United States, an average of one of every 150 people have their checked baggage mishandled or left behind each year. Now knowing that most people usually get it back, doesnt erase the inconvenience or anxiety of not knowing that they WILL get it back.

There are many causes for this and some say that in fact, the largest cause is a passengers late arrival or too short a layover when making a connection. That is, time frames that dont allow enough time for proper baggage handling is the main culprit. Of course there is also the careless airport worker factor. But whatever the reason and no matter how luxurious your hotel room may be, how much you know about your destination, lost luggage can ruin a perfectly planned flight plan! While airline companies can compensate you for costs, the inconvenience is often immeasurable. Nor can you ever get back things that have sentimental value.

So here are three simple steps you can take to save yourself the grief and wasted time of lost luggage:

1. Get to the airport on time. If you come in late, may not be enough time for your luggage to make the flight, even if you do!

2. Ensure enough connection time so your bags can make the connection too.

3. If you travel a lot, seriously consider getting a Tumi bag for all other unfortunate possibilities. The Tumi Tracer Recovery Program is exclusive and complimentary to their customers and is said to unite about 99% of lost (Tumi) luggage with their rightful owners. That is cause for a sigh of relief!

Happy travels!
