The job of a cardiovascular ultrasound technician is to work along with doctors in order to diagnose any defects related to the heart and arteries using ultrasound equipment. Independently working cardiovascular ultrasound technicians are required to have a minimum associate's degree plus at least a year's clinical experience before they can work without any supervision.

This field offers different positions including echocardiography and invasive cardiology. There is a huge employment potential in this field as the employment opportunities for cardiac ultrasound technicians are always on the growth.

Cardiac ultrasound technicians perform different tasks in addition to their core job responsibility. This can include scheduling and performing patient examination, taking down patient history and reporting results to the doctor for further diagnosis.

The technicians also search for sounds of abnormal blood flow, heart rhythm, saturation of oxygen and other heart imperfections. Cardiac ultrasound technicians can further their training to pursue more specialized professions to bring other duties under their job responsibilities including Electrocardiograms, cardiac catheterization and other comprehensive cardiovascular ultrasound procedures.

Educational Requirements

Becoming a cardiac ultrasound technician requires one to complete a minimum of 2 years of associate degree in sonography. However, students are nowadays more interested in pursuing a 4-year bachelor's degree that helps them pursue higher career in the profession. While some of the states require a cardiac ultrasound technician to have a license in order to pursue the job, other states don't require it.

Certification

Most of the employers are ever more preferring professionals to have a certification from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). And, achieving this certification helps improve the employability of the professionals.

Additional Job Responsibilities

In addition to their regular job profile, cardiac ultrasound technicians are also required to handle the patients and communicate effectively with them. They are also required to continuously update their knowledge about the latest technology and procedure in the field so as to remain highly efficient. As part of the job, they would be required to stand and walk for extended periods of time. In addition, they may also be required to lift equipments and even patients when helping them in properly positioning their body. This clearly means that if you want to pursue a career as a specialized ultrasound technician, or even a regular ultrasound technician, it would be ideal to maintain good health.
