3 Common Misconceptions Of Identity Theft- What People Need To Know About Identity Theft

By:

Most families are not aware of the dangers we face against Identity Theft. Without proper knowledge we lack preventative skill sets, therefor leaving us defenseless to these criminals. There are however many people in the U.S. that do have an idea of how to protect themselves, but yet many still have become victims. Well, why is that? It's because most of those people have common misconceptions on how to prevent Identity Theft from happening. Though some of the preventative practices they have are good, most are out dated. Meaning with technology advancing, thieves get advanced too.

3 Common Misconceptions

1) Most bank institutions do offer fraud protection for clients, but you must read more closely to your policy. Most banks state they only protect you in case someone uses your bank card, tampers with checking/savings accounts, or writes fraudulent checks. The misconception is that people believe that banks protect all their financials in a case of Identity Theft, but the reality is they don't. Especially the larger the amount, the more difficult it is to prove your information was indeed stolen. Not to mention that there are a few banks that have already had their systems hacked. If your information is lost to hackers through you bank, the bank will monitor your account but they claim not to be responsible for any other Identity Theft if it happens outside your bank account, even though the thieves more than possibly had stolen your info from the bank in the first place.

2) Thousands of people have the misconception that Identity Theft only happens to careless people. The truth is that most victims in recent studies show that they in fact are aware of Identity Theft and tried practicing ways to stay preventative. As much as we hate to say it, some crooks are pretty clever and have come up with many ways to steal your personal information without having to physically steal any of it from you. There are actual reports that show these criminals have put credit/debit card readers on many ATM's and Gas Station Pumps. You would never know if you were actually having your card information downloaded, until you seen numerous charges and debits on your bank statements.

3) The biggest misconception that Americans today believe is that they only have to worry about their financials. BIG MISTAKE!!! Even though most Identity Theft is financial fraud, think about this for a second. Identity criminals steal social security numbers to open bank accounts, pull out loans, and mortgages. They also use social security numbers and your name to run up huge medical bills. They also steal your information to create fake documents and either use them to commit crimes under your name, or even resale the information to other people to use. There are actually 5 areas of Identity Theft: Social Security Theft, Medical Theft, D.L License Theft, Financial Theft, and Criminal/Character Theft.

In conclusion...

Start to become aware of the dangers we are faced with on Identity Theft. There are so many ways identity thieves can obtain our information. By practicing awareness, one can really minimize the risk of Identity Theft and know once in for all how these criminals think. Once you become a victim of this crime it could take years to fix all the damage done by these scumbags. Not to mention all the money you will use to fix all the mistakes on your credit record and it will definitely cost some serious hours away from work.
