3 Arguments That Underpin Health And Safety Training

By:

Health and Safety training can sometimes seem like a hindrance to the smooth operations of working life, whether you work in an office, out in the open (primary industries) or in manufacturing. But in reality, it has brought a great deal to working life in the United Kingdom. In this article we'll look at some of the main arguments for having Health and Safety training. These are the issues that are sometimes overlooked when this kind of training is being implemented; but it could be argued that it is important to understand the almost philosophical points that back up such training.

The first reason that is often cited is that of moral. The moral argument is based on the notion that people should be allowed to work in peace and security wherever they work. As the Industrial revolution came upon us, health and safety training was something that didn't even exist. Workers were frequently put in dangerous situations that resulted in injuries or even death. Thankfully, ideas about what is expected from workers no longer involve having their limbs trapped in a cloth making machine. So this moral argument is quite just, that people in the UK and indeed around the world have the right to work in safe conditions.

The second argument for ensuring that a workforce has adequate health and safety training centres on the idea that if you don't have it in place, it can cost companies and the nation state as a whole a great deal of money. If you allow people to work in unsafe conditions, then the likelihood of them being injured or even killed increases a great deal. Somewhere along the line, especially with the injured, somebody has to pay for the damage to be rectified as much as possible. In the UK, this falls the NHS which is state funded and provides care to anyone who needs it.

The third argument is legal. There are a great deal of laws in the UK that insist that employers ensure the workplace is free from risks. If they fail to make sure that this is the case, they can be left open to legal action, which can, in the worst case, mean that the company goes under.

These are the three areas that underpin the reasons for health and safety training. In short, they make the quality of life for everyone go up, which can only be a good thing.
