25 People Seriously Injured In San Diego Taxi Accident

By:

At least 25 persons are confirmed injured in an accident in San Diego caused when a taxi plowed down a sidewalk in the Gaslamp District. According to news reports, the accident occurred about 2 AM on Sunday morning. The sidewalk was full of people walking out of a local nightclub at closing time. Suddenly, a taxi jumped onto the sidewalk and drove right through the crowd.

Out of the 25 people who were injured, 23 people had to be hospitalized. Four people have suffered critical injuries. At least one woman was pinned against the wall by the taxi, and suffered a leg amputation. Fortunately, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. Several of the pedestrians have suffered broken bones, fractures and lacerations. The taxi that the man was driving was a Emerald Cab. Soon after the accident, the driver was attacked by angry pedestrians, and suffered a broken nose. The aftermath of the accident saw scenes of panic as people cried for help for injured friends.

Police have spoken to the driver, a 42-year-old man, who says that he blacked out just before the accident. Officials don't believe that alcohol was a factor in this accident. Excessive speed also does not seem to have been a factor here, and the taxi was traveling at around 15 mph at the time. Officials also don't believe that the crash was intentional. However, police are taking the driver's admission that he blacked out, seriously, and are investigating his whereabouts just before the accident.

More than 24 hours after the accident, California car accident lawyers are learning more details about the accident. But, there is still no information about the reason for the man's blackout just before the accident. However, California car accident attorneys often see such blackouts in persons suffering from some kind of medical condition. For instance, diabetics, persons suffering from hypertension, or a heart murmur can suffer a blackout while driving, increasing their risk of an accident. So far, there is no evidence that the man suffered a medical condition behind the wheel. However, suffering a blackout could also mean that the person dozed off at the wheel. Los Angeles police are now investigating whether the taxi driver dozed off at the time of the accident.
