2012 - The End Of The World And The Science Of 2012

Recently Hollywood released its latest doomsday movie, 2012. If your are into special effects, then this a movie to see. If you're looking for information on the Mayan 2012 prophecy, you will disappointed. There is however more science in that movie than all that has been written about 2012 and the end of the world. Why can I say that? Think of the technology that went into creating the special effects of that movie. I swear it looked like real life photography.

The visuals left nothing to the imagination, the ground erupted into mountain high belches of soil and stone, people fell into mile deep crevices, buildings toppled, and the oceans submerged the coastlines with mile high tsunamis. I knew better, but I swear there was a National Geographic photographer behind that camera.

Roland Emmerich, the director, obviously got the idea for the film from the Mayan prophecy. Except for the trailers the Mayan prophecy was barely mentioned.

I also suspect that the Mayan prophecy was rarely mentioned except in the trailers because of the lack of hard core scientific fact.

This is what science does tell us:
* The Mayan were great astronomers and mathematicians.
* They recorded the paths of the heavenly bodies.
* Time was recorded in cycles. Their last recorded cycle ends on December 21, 2012.
* The codex that identifies that date, refers to one of their gods, Bolon Yookte' K'uh. He is a god of war, conflict, and of the underworld.
* One translation of the codex refers to blackness and the descent of the god, Bolon Yookte' K'uh.

That is what science knows. Everything else is conjecture and, well, prophecy. Yet this archaeological discovery has fired our imagination.
We should not be to quick to discount the end of the world soothsayers. Even scientists cannot agree on the translation of the 2012 Mayan codex.

In 1966, Michael D. Coe, an archaeologist and anthropologist, in his book, The Maya, wrote the following: "there is a suggestion ... that Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth [b'ak'tun]. Thus ... our present universe [would] be annihilated on December 24, AD 2011, [later revised to December 23, 2012] when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion." [Wikipedia]

Maybe we shouldn't dismiss the doomsday soothsayers so quickly without learning all that we can. I know I will, just in case. Maybe you should too.
