The Ford Mustang is the original pony car and frequently sets the standard other manufacturers try to emulate. The 08' model year sees the introduction of the new Mustang Bullitt whose name comes from an old film starring Steve McQueen. Both coupe and convertible body styles are offered along with a great set of trim packages. Like previous models there is plentiful amounts of power to go around, even from the smallest engine. There is another new 2008 Ford Mustang model as well, the Shelby GT500KR and it's the most powerful pony car ever produced by the manufacturer.

Trim packages available include the V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium, GT Deluxe, GT Premium, and the other models mentioned above. For a basic package Deluxe models come with a great list of standard amenities. Included equipment includes CD players, a great selection of interior fabrics, cruise control, remote keyless entry, 16 inch alloy wheels, AC, full power accessories, and other additional features. Moving up to the Premium package you get a CD changer to go with a premium audio system, power adjustable driver seats, fog lamps, and 17 inch alloy wheels. The premium and deluxe packages are practically identical for V6 and GT models with the GT premium getting fog lamps, full leather upholstery, and a Shaker 500 sound system.

Yet another special make that is returning for the 08' year is the California special package. That model comes with 18 inch wheels, chin spoilers, unique paint jobs, chrome exhaust, special leather seats, and an enlarged front grill. Both the Bullitt and Shelby models come with all the fancy options along with their own unique paint schemes as well.

To power these cars there are a few different engines offered. Basic models come with a 4.0 liter V6 engine which produces 210 horsepower and 240 pound feet of torque. GT models come with a 4.6 liter V8 that puts out 300 horsepower and 320 pound feet of torque. All of these pony cars are rear wheel drive and come with either a 5 speed manual transmission or a 5 speed automatic. An interesting fact to note is that the GT model equipped with a manual transmission is capable of doing 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The Mustang has always been a very safe vehicle and this model year is no different. Standard safety features include side airbags, front and rear disc brakes, and antilock brakes. Unfortunately stability control and full length side curtain airbags are not offered on any models. In most crash tests the 2008 Ford Mustang receives very great ratings. Frontal impacts usually get a perfect score while side impacts are either perfect or a close 4 out of 5 stars.

Fuel economy is fairly respectable as well for such a powerful car. The larger engines get between 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. The best models range from 20 mpg city to 28 mpg highway. For a pony car with a lot of muscle those numbers are great, considering they resemble those of a family sized sedan.

The Mustang offers a great opportunity for buyers to bust into the performance car market without spending an arm and a leg. The 'Stang offers great refinement and a large selection of accessories that certainly make this a very rewarding car to own and drive.
