2 Off-beat Off-shore Oil Rig Jobs For You

By:

Among the number of off-shore oil rig positions available, the most popular are entry-level jobs like roustabouts, roughnecks and stewards. If you are looking for a more off-beat job, however, there are some which are not recognized as they should be. Here are two of them.

Tool pusher

*As a tool pusher, or rig manager, you will be in charge of supplying all the equipment needed on an oil rig, making sure that all the workers do their jobs correctly and adhere to safety regulations. The tool pusher makes sure drilling is done safely and correctly and also keeps an eye on the budget. Basically, you will oversee the entire drilling job and liaison between your superiors and the workers.

*You will need a high school diploma. Many tool pushers start out as roustabouts/roughnecks and move up the ranks. Of course, to become a rig manager you will need to have experience in the oil and gas industry and have certification in safety norms, organization and training.

*As a tool pusher, you can expect to make between $60,000 and $155,000 a year. Many companies also offer pension and healthcare benefits.

Pump man

*Another hardly talked-about job is that of a pump man. Having one on board a rig is a must as it is he who helps maintain the smooth running of the pipelines. As a pump man you will have to keep an eye on the pipelines to ensure the oil flows into the right pipes and is collected the correct way. You will have to clean the pipes regularly and make sure they are not damaged. You will also be required to respond to emergency situations efficiently.

*So your job will consist of three parts: supervisory, upkeep of pipelines and responding to an emergency. How much experience you have will count more than your education and other qualifications.

*Duty-wise, you will be on call 8-12 hours a day. You may also have to work longer than the rest of the crew, who work one-two weeks on and the same off over six months. Because this job is considered part of the engineering team, you could start off earning $50, 000 per year.

Both tool pusher and pump man jobs are supervisory in nature and require managerial skills. One of the reasons these jobs are not prominent is because they are behind-the-scenes ones. These, however, are two of the important jobs on an oil rig.
