The first main difference is that a surgeon is a person who performs the actual surgery or operation whereas surgical technician is a person who assists the surgeon during surgery. In other words, you can say that a surgeon is a person who is a master at doing surgeries and operations and surgical technician is a person who specializes in helping the surgeon in the best possible manner.

Comparison
If you compare the educational careers of surgeon and surgical technician then you can find a lot of differences in them. First of all, a surgeon is a person who has completed a four year degree program along with two year educational program of graduation. In other words you can say that he has total sixteen years of education plus two years of a graduate degree as well. After that, surgeons further specialize in their respective fields. Time required for this is not a part of their educational career. It means that they need to study more in order to become professionals in their field.

Contrary to this, a surgical technician is a person who has one hundred and fifty hours of training. In order to start his job as surgical technician or surgical technologist, he needs an experience of a year along with his one hundred and fifty hours training course. After finishing this, he is called a nursing assistant. After the time span of two or three years, position of nursing assistant changes to surgical technician. It means that three to four years are required to become a professional surgical technician. After surgical technologist there is another rank and it is called RN. After spending two to three more years in this field, a surgical technician becomes pre-operative. After getting this rank, he will be capable of handling the operation room and sterilizing it.
